To build something amazing, you need a community behind you. You’ll need to make many important decisions on the journey and knowledgeable guides can help you in your journey. You also need the right equipment and encouragement. It’s hard to reach your full potential when you’re hanging out with people who are not interested in personal development and reaching their own definition of success. You have to have a squad behind you if you want to succeed.
Your success is in your squad and in the words of Jim Rohn,
“You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”
If you want higher grades, to get more money, get that promotion, hang out with people who are already doing those things. A 2015 study run by research conducted by SHE found the academic performance of more than 100 Russian students, they found the students who worked together in study groups received better results. Ergo, researchers concluded that while students didn’t choose their friends solely based of their grades, that those who hung out with higher achievers, also achieved highly themselves.
As for those hanging out with underachievers? Yup, you guessed it, their grades tanked. According to LinkedIn, 70% of professionals get hired at companies where they already have a connection (shout out to my fellow San Jose State University Spartans! ;) ) and 80% of jobs are never posted online, it’s known as the hidden job market. To find these opportunities, you need to know someone in order to get an inside tip or referral.
Likewise, in his extensive study of social networks, Ronald Burt (professor at the university of Chicago’s school of business) discovered that the most successful people labelled as “brokers” moved between different networks passing on information and building bridges between groups. This makes brokers incredibly valuable to the people around them. These well-connected brokers reaped the most rewards, they got promoted at a much faster rate, and receive more recognition as a result.
Being part of a social network of successful people enables you to get access to information that you would not have access to prior to working alone
